This Doberman figurine is new, fresh from the kiln, though it was was cast out of a vintage mold passed down from a former manufacturer, probably dating back to the '70s or '80s.
In those days, a large quantity of dog figurines was produced in Japan and exported worldwide under various brand names, such as Shafford, Napco or Lefton... Those manufacturers now no longer exist. However, some of their casting molds have been passed down and some dog breeds are still made in a small way in a small factory run by a husband and wife team, where this Doberman figurine was also made.
On the belly, there is manufacturer's name 長江陶業 (Nagae Tougyou) along with serial number and a sticker that reads "Seto-yaki"(瀬戸焼). 'Seto-yaki' is a general term for porcelain products made in Seto Japan, which includes all kinds of porcelain items such as animal, human, Disney and more figurines, and also chinaware for practical as well as decorative purposes. "Seto" is a city located in the center of Japan, and is also the center for Japan's ceramics industry.

From Occupied Japan Era to the late '70s, Seto-yaki items under various brand names used to be exported worldwide. However, as the ceramics industry has been declining year by year, many manufacturers have been forced to shut down their factories in the last few decades.
