EMMOTT/MATCHLESS
Cindertrack racing and grasstrack rac-
ing have regained much popularity in
England during the past two seasons, and
as is usually the case when interest is
aroused, new machine developments are
taking place. One very interesting project
is that of London engineer. Jack Emmott.
who with the help of Nigel Boocock, Inter-
national speedway star doing the riding
and testing, has produced a Matchless-
engined speedway machine.
For many years the only engine avail-
able in England to win races on the
short cindertrack ovals has been the peren-
nial J.A.P., and more recently the Czech
Eso, both being very expensive. This in-
spired Jack Emmott to use a Matchless
G-80/CS engine modified to his specifica-
tions which include a 12.6:1 compression
ratio for methanol and scientifically flowed
inlet and exhaust ports.
Cylinder and cylinder head fins have
been removed on the track version since
methanol fuels are used. This, plus other
modifications, have helped to get the
weight of the engine down to 56 lbs.,
which is approximately the same as the
J.A.P. unit.
For speedway purposes a 1-1/16" track
carburetor is fitted as standard, as are a
chrome or enameled frame, single-speed
countershaft, Manx Norton clutch. Front
forks are sprung and adjustable for track
and rider comfort. Other types of racing
options include a choice of compression
ratios, 8.7:1, 10:1. 12:1, an Amal GP
carburetor, two-speed countershaft, front
and rear brakes.
When the motorcycle was displayed at
the Earls Court Show in London, con-
sensus of opinion was that the workman-
ship and general appearance were of a
very high standard, and we are looking
forward to seeing how well it will
perform.
