While most companies treat the lightweight
motorcycle as a kind of stepchild to their heav-
ier models, NSU engineers, for the past 50 years,
have concentrated on perfecting it. NSU doesn’t
manufacture heavier models; in fact, more than any
other company, NSU made the lightweight popular;
they put fun and-excitement into it with their un-
usual technical features. Take springing. Because
springing is so important, the front fork has two
compensator arms which soak up the bumps with a
lateral motion, and thereby really cushion the ride.
Due to Ultramax valve timing, NSU produces the
world’s most outstanding 4-stroke lightweights. An
eccentric rod system uses an overhead camshaft to
provide a powerful valve drive that creates a con-
stant, quiet flow of power. Valves are factory-
adjusted, need never be touched after they are set.
To push performance to its peak, air is passed
through a filter, where it is “calmed” and freed of
dust —turbulent air at the carburetor intake will use
up energy and decrease performance. Long range
benefit is the increase in the life span of the engine.
Because of the destructive’effect of dust, a micronic
oil filter is used; this removes steel particles mag-
netically, as well as screening microscopic dust parti-
cles. As a result, you change oil only once every 2,000
miles.
Again, if you want to ride full throttle, you can
trust NSU’s 36 sq. in. brakes (developed as a result
of NSU racing experience) to stop you.
There are two gleaming, glistening models. Colors
are blue and silver; every exposed part is heavily
chromed (but: one has a red gas tank). The models
are-SUPERMAX: 250 cc, 18 hp, 80 mph. MAXI:
175 cc. 12l/2 hp, 68 mph. Both engineered with pride,
and a joy to ride.
